Costa del Silencio
Costa Del Silencio ('Coast of Silence') was one of the very first purpose-built tourist developments to be set-up on the island of Tenerife. It all began back in the early 60's, when a joint venture between Tenerife and various Belgian businesses built a massive complex entitled 'Ten-Bel', which consisted of four individual sections, called Eureka, Primavera, Maravilla and Alborada. Since then this relatively small segment of the island has escalated into a massive concern for residential properties, including 'La Baraca', 'Hacienda', 'Chaparral', 'Residencial Atlantico', 'Eureka', 'Amarilla Bay', 'Los Almendros', 'Alborada', 'Costa Sol', 'Garanana', 'Los Geranios', 'Drago', 'Urbanization Terrasol', 'Santa Ana', 'Primavera', 'Tagoro Park', 'Edificio Rocas del Mar', 'Jardinas de Coral', 'Atlantic View', Residencial Bellavista', 'Alondres Park', and El Papillon -to name but a few!
The majority of the complexes consist of a selection of studios, one, two and three bed apartments, although there is also a choice of townhouses on offer within selected resorts. To cope with the influx of tourists, along with the vast increase of permanent residents over the years, three commercial centres were built in the area, namely the 'CC El Chaparal', along with the 'CC Trebol' -and the 'CC Coral Mar Squares', along with several groups of outlets and numerous individual bars and restaurants which line the main street. Together they have created a plethora of alfresco wining and dining establishments, including Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Spanish, Italian and Belgian cuisine, along with a selection of unique bars, including an 'Manhattan Fashion Cafe-bar', a Country Saloon, a 'Gastro Theatre Bar', a 'Eurobar', a Spanish tapas bar -and even a 'Milk bar'. To add to the aforementioned establishments, there is also the usual array of English bars and disco pubs, along with various themed bars and cafes, an ice-cream parlour -and even a fish and chip shop.
Apart from an abundance of eateries and nightly entertainment houses, Costa del Silencio also boasts a varied selection of supermarkets, mini-markets, shoe-shops, charity shops, electronic shops, beachwear and souvenir shops -and also a frozen fish shop. It also has what every town should have, such as a handful of estate agents, several rent-a-car establishments, a bunch of excursion outlets, an internet cafe, a diving school and a penny arcade / gaming complex. If this isn't enough to satisfy one's every needs, then how about adding an American barber-shop and a couple of unisex hairdressers, a handful of nail manicure, body massage and beauty-treatment specialists, an agricultural centre, a major bank, an opticians, a pizza-taxi -and an oriental delicatessen-cum-bakery shop! Even though Costa del Silencio is on the coast, it does not have any beaches, but sitting adjacent to the town (and therefore within easy walking distance) is the ornately unique Spanish fishing village of Las Galletas, which has a lovely promenade, dotted with all kinds of fish and tapas restaurants, the majority of which overlook a small stretch of volcanic sand -are so they are perfectly placed for those romantic evenings, when couples can gently sip on their glasses of wine, whilst listening to the Atlantic waves crashing over the rocks -and watching the sun setting over a golden or crimson horizon.
